McLendon Hall Dormitory Preparing Green Welcome

by brian yalung on Monday, January 26th, 2009

Drew University students are due to come back soon and much of them are stocked up at the McLendon Hall Dormitory. While many would simply go through the motions of fixing their rooms, a “green treat” awaits them as the building has been environmentally redesigned.

What they may not notice is the building’s environmentally friendly touches:

• sensors that switch off the lights in common areas when no one is around
• water-saving showers and sinks
• carpeting and floor tiles made from recycled materials

The $14 million dorm was designed and built so that it can earn a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification from the council, a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustainable building design. Another constituency Drew considered when building the dorm, its first in 35 years, was students.
