The Australian Medical Association (AMA) acknowledges the merits of “sleep pods” and have given their nod of approval to Queensland Health to roll out “sleep pods” for doctors in state hospitals.
The AMA’s Shane George says it reduces risks for staff working long hours.
“I think it is part of the solution, [but] it’s certainly not a complete solution,” he said.” There’s some data from the sleep research centre in South Australia that suggests having a 10-20 minute nap can actually increase the alertness of the doctor and actually reduce fatigue related risk and allow them to work for longer.”
