Store Shifts Biz From Shoes to Beds
In these trying times, business decisions may need to have drastic measures and this includes overhauling your product line from standard to more important needs. Such was the business decision that Elder-Beerman department store had made, shifting from the traditional shoes, sweaters, and slacks to beds, cabinets and couches.
Now you may look at it as a totally drastic change since these two product lines are quite far-fetched. But if you do your homework like Elder-Beerman, it is all a matter of catering to the needs and moving demand of people these days. Apparently, bed and room requirements are what they saw and the rest is history.

The former Elder-Beerman department store in the Lakeshore Marketplace has gone from an outlet of shoes, sweaters and slacks to a new retailer of couches, beds and cabinets. The retail store at 5159 Harvey has been transformed into Younkers Furniture Gallery, the first in the state of Michigan.
Younkers Furniture Gallery opened Wednesday. It is seen as a major retailer’s vote of confidence for Muskegon and West Michigan at a time of severe economic distress across the state.
