One of the things that we should all pay attention these days would be our plumbing fixtures. Aside from the fact that water is slowly being scarce, rising utilities expense is another area we can really address, particularly to the last drop of water.

To some, one drop would not mean much but did you know that if you leave leaky faucets as they are, they can grow worse? Sometimes, just one faucet fixture can make a difference and while many would leave it to be attended later on, it would be best to address them in their early stages.

Besides all you need is a wrench and a new faucet. Some would go to the extent of changing the rubber fittings or washers to save on cost and it can really stop the dripping water. Here are some careful steps to go about it:

1. Shut down the main bulb of your water source
2. Loosen the faucet fixture
3. Get some Teflon and wrap it around the new fitting and then twist it slowly towards the pipe where the old one was at.
4. Tighten it with the use of a vise grip or a wrench.
5. Turn on the bulb and check for leaks.

Also, if you don’t feel like being a Mr. Handyman, there are always plumbers who can do it for you for a minimal fee.

When you are planning your home decors, bathrooms will certainly not have much consideration as far as how you want them to look like. Choosing tiles, vanities, sink designs, and toilets seem to be enough but if you look further, you can improve it a bit further.

To some, the actual shower space can be as simple as choosing between shower curtains or traditional sliding doors. Of the two, it will depend a lot on budget.

There is not question that sliding doors are bound to cost more and for people who want to save on unnecessary expenses such as shower and bath areas, they may want to consider assessing the entire setup.

Curtains will do for most as they can be easily replaced once molds start to build. The important thing is to make sure that you control the water spatter since eventually, whichever of the two a home owner would choose, safety is surely needed to be considered in such cases.

When you consider remodeling, it would be best to kick things off with the easiest places to tackle; the smaller areas like the bathroom or the kitchen? Why? Well for one, smaller areas are easier and faster to finish compared to the big areas like the masters bedroom or even the living room area. These two areas may only be a matter of tiles and wallpaper and for sure, installation time is the only problem. This will of course vary on the level of remodeling, since some go as far as changing the other fixtures such as the sink and the pipes which may have rusted as well.

This is of course with reservations that you are contemplating renovating your home in its entirety. It is like starting from small to big, something that can somehow showcase to you the degree of progress that can entice you once the larger and harder areas start to come in.

Overall these would be the areas for consideration in Bathroom or Kitchen Remodeling:

1. Floor Tiles
2. Wall Paper or Repainting
3. Change of Plumbing Fixtures
4. Change or addition of Lighting fixtures

DIY Hot20 Solar Water System

For people who need warm water, you can check out this new simple to install solar water system from FAFCO, Inc. It thrives on sunlight for power and can be installed inside a day. It comes equipped with a solar system in a box and can even function with your existing home heaters.

A switch senses when the roof temperature exceeds the tank temperature, turning the collector on. It channels water through the unglazed panels, absorbing the sun’s heat. Heated water is then transferred to the hot water tank for storage until needed.

When not in use, water in the solar collectors is stored in the drainback tank, preventing the water from freezing.

The price for getting one plays somewhere between $2,200 to $5,000, a lot cheaper than the usual standard home solar electric system’s price of up to $50,000.

Now here is something I am not too sold on. Don’t get me wrong the Seatub is a cool lounge concept however my decor tastes are a tad traditional. No points in guessing what was the source of inspiration for designer Baek-Ki Kim was though we do wonder how comfortable this thing actually would be?

Here is what the designer says about his inspiration:
“The inspiration behind it is abstract - the exploration of combining objects with different functions seems as distant as the old adage “apples and oranges”

Using shower curtains to add that touch of classy appeal in most bathrooms as we all know but this piece of news regarding the toxic substances that they emit may make us think otherwise. Known to help avoid water splatters from your shower spot, you will notice some smell of normal plastic with mixed chemicals that seem to be normal with placing new shower curtains.

This was our immediate presumption. Apparently there is something else. These fumes do not emit such for nothing and for sure this is what this study from the Vinyl Council of Canada.

The study was conducted on five PVC shower curtains purchased from retail outlets in the United States and Canada. Testing showed different volatile organic compounds being released into the air from a vinyl shower curtain over 28 days. The total VOCs measured was 16 times greater than the recommended amount for indoor air quality.

All of the brands tested contained di(2-ethylhexyl) phthalate and diisononyl phthalate. These chemicals have been banned in children’s toys in California. Other chemicals found in the curtains (such as ethylbenzene, methyl isobutyl ketonedefine and cyclohexanone) are considered a human health concern under the Canadian Environmental Protection Act.
