For those of you trying to save space in college and you have a bunk bed with no one using the bottom of it, here’s a great way to make a hanging desk on the bottom of the bunk bed and save more space.

If you’re just putting up a loft and shoving all your crap under it, though, you’re wasting more potential than Lance Armstrong riding a Wal-Mart special. Lofts give you a sturdy piece of furniture with plenty of wooden beams – it’d be silly not to hang stuff off of them! That’s precisely the idea I got when I came home this summer and needed to build a desk. Instead of buying PVC pipe to build a standing desk, I picked up some chains and built a hanging desk. Now, not only do I have a cool-looking desk, but I also have all the floor space I would have had with no desk at all.

How to begin…. What you need

You need basic tools for carpentry and wood working, manual or powertools. This bed can be made using only a saw, a screw driver and a steady hand for straight cutting….. Im a bit on the lazy side so I used a jigsaw and a drill (a battery screw driver could work as well), you also need 3/4″ or 1″ x 6″ x 10′ boards and a pole 6″ diameter. (How many boards you need or how long the pole, depends on how tall you want your bed to be. (standard height of a bed is about 2 feet) and the size of your mattress so you will have to do those calculations yourself…… lazy side remember).

1″ board will make a stronger more sturdy bed so I recommend those. You will also need about 20 screws, and 3 or 4 hours of your time.

To make the fire finish you will also need a plumber’s torch or any other gas torch but of course this is optional.

This is the Spongebob Square Bed i made for my kid. its a pretty basic loft style bed. because the ceiling is low i could not make bunk beds, so i made the underneath to store toys. the kids have to climb through Spongebobs mouth to get to the steps. i also made Spongebob easy to remove to make it easy to change the sheets, he simply lifts off.

“Background: My original idea was to use aluminum pipes to create a frame large enough for a queen but use crossover speedrailers so that I can easily adjust and take it apart whenever I want since I move a lot.  I wanted the head legs to be longer than the tail legs and the base to be a couple of inches longer and wider than my bed.  I really wanted to avoid Home Depot at all costs but I couldn’t find a place that sold aluminum pipes.”
