This is the season where most people would have to make room and beds for visitors such as relatives and friends who may want to sleep over. And one of the keen bed alternatives we know of are the inflatable beds that are handy and often kept in storage, only to be taken out when needed such as seasons as now.

But while that is a good solution, make sure you are aware of avoiding having babies and kids sleeping on them. They have some health hazards you should watch out and if you are not careful, you may end up experiencing tragedies rather than sweet sleep for the holidays.

“The danger arises when they are used for babies and infants aged under the recommended age, and in particular babies and infants less than 12 months old,” he said.

“It is important that an infant’s face must not come in direct contact with the mattress or side of a bed.”

Gaps between the side of a bed and the mattress can also entrap a child’s head.

“When very young children are in a dangerous position they may not have the strength to reposition themselves as an older child would. This can cause suffocation, whether the contacting surface is made of plastic or fabric.”

Recalls on Hammock Stands and Appliances Announced

Ok here we go again. A new round of recalls has been announced due to some safety issues but this time around they are not from China. Rather, thanks to the incidents that have been reported on one occasion or another, it can be seen that these stuff which include hammock stands, toasters, chest drawers and boilers have caused injury to consumers who have bought them.

• Hammock stands. About 30,000 wooden hammock stands, manufactured in China and imported by Pottery Barn, because the stand can deteriorate over time when used outdoors. This poses a risk of falls and cuts. The company has received 12 reports of injuries. The stands were sold through the Pottery Barn catalog and Web site between March 2003 and July 2008.

• Toasters. About 210,000 General Electric toasters, manufactured in China and imported by Wal-Mart Stores, because they can short-circuit and pose a fire or shock hazard. The toasters were sold at Wal-Mart Stores around the country between September 2007 and July 2008.

• Chest of drawers. About 5,000 KVIBY chests, manufactured in Denmark by Ikea Home Furnishings, because the glass knobs on the drawers can break, posing a risk of cuts. The company received three reports of cuts in the United States that required medical attention. The chests were sold at Ikea stores around the country between August 2007 and July 2008.

• Boilers. About 4,600 Vitodens 200 boilers, manufactured in Canada by Viessmann Manufacturing, because the gas can leak. This poses a fire hazard. The boilers were sold by plumbing and heating contractors around the country between January 2002 and December 2007.

If you think you bought any of these during the said dates, check out your receipts and the brand. Do not allow yourself to be the next victim.

Boeing 747 Transformed to Jumbo Hostel

Earlier this year, there were posts regarding the new implementation of setting up beds in planes, particularly for first class accommodation. This time around, there are plans for the architecture of a Boeing 747 that will be transformed into a Jumbo Hostel. But unlike other aircrafts that have added bed accommodations, this new concept by Oscar Dios will be mainly served on the ground.

The concept is indeed something different. We all know that cases such as delays in flight make it uncomfortable for some passengers and with this Jumbo Hostel around perhaps waiting will no longer be a problem but more of a luxury for them from hereon.

Dios bought the 500-seater jumbo jet, built in 1976, from its last owner Transjet after the air operator went bust in 2002.

The Jumbo Hostel, which will remain grounded at the airport, will begin taking reservations from travellers in December.

If the venture proves successful in Sweden, Dios hopes to open more jumbo jet hostels elsewhere.

While most of us are busy figuring out what bed to get for ourselves, people in some parts of the world are lucky enough to have a good place to sleep. A lot of this points to the people who are less fortunate, having to look for a good place to rest which often times is the concrete floors of public places.

Many of us fail to see it since we are too occupied going home and enjoying our own beds. Just bear in mind, while you are complaining of worn out beds or mattresses, people out there would be more than willing to trade places you to get quality sleep.

The film, which documents the lives of four homeless people in Atlanta, will have a free premiere at Theatre Dublin beginning at 8 p.m. Friday.

The Hazards of Summer Include Outdoor Furniture

Summer time is near and for sure, a lot of people will be holding parties and gatherings outdoors. While it does seem that a clean yard and some food and refreshments will be in demand, there are certain hazards that summer festivities bring and sadly it includes the choice of furniture that will be used.

Faraway Furniture has shared the following tips to ensure you have a safe summer. They may seem harmless but it would never hurt to consider them.

Faraway Furniture offers the following free tips for safe summer outdoor entertaining:

1. Food – It’s important that certain foods be kept chilled or taken inside before too long. Certain types of foods carry the risk of causing food poisoning if they’re left out too long in the summer heat. These can include foods like potato and pasta salads, cheeses and other dairy products, and meat (try to only cook up meat that will be eaten soon after, and bring any leftover raw meats inside (or put it on ice) to be cooked later.

2. Furniture – If using patio or garden furniture, such as for a family party in the back yard, inspect it carefully before the party (especially if this is the first time it will be used for the season). To avoid injuries, make sure wood isn’t splintering and furniture is sturdy. It’s also a good idea to ensure there aren’t any sorts of nests or infestations on or around the furniture and eating area.

3. Insects – A little bug bite might not be a big deal for everyone, but there are exceptions. Those allergic to bees, for instance, can have severe reactions to bee stings. Other bugs have been known to carry diseases. If nothing else, insects can be an annoyance during outdoor entertaining. Instead of using toxic chemicals or candles (a potential danger in their own right, especially if the party involves children) consider using herbs and other plants, or normal household materials, to repel insects. For example, fresh basil is known to repel mosquitoes and flies (making it ideal to be placed on a picnic table). Lavender can help to repel ticks and moths. While plants are more likely to attract bees than repel them, you can keep them away from your food with dryer sheets placed on the table or near it (bees don’t like the scent).

4. Fire Hazards – Outdoor entertaining can pose a fire risk, with grills to bonfires being common attractions. Always make sure grills are clean and supervised, and that no open fires are ever left unattended. Don’t throw things into bonfires, and make sure there are no overhanging plants that might be too close to the flames. And of course, keep children at a safe distance at all times.

One thing that any person would want to bring home from a trip would be the presence of bed bugs. While internal hygiene and cleaning will help keep out these dreaded bugs in our homes, you just have to consider that being careful includes the places where you come from.

Things such as your suitcases, shoes and clothes are sitting ducks to which bed bugs use as their way of commuting and invading clean homes. No one can tell about their presence although some itching and eagle-eyed observations can really do the trick.

To avoid them you just have to be careful. Once you get home after a trip, try to change your clothes and put your baggage somewhere far from beds or even sofas.

First, know that high-end hotels are not immune to bed bugs. Steritech, a pest control company, studied 700 hotels and 24 percent of them had bed bug activity.

Defend what you can control. At home, encase your mattress in plastic and make sure the zipper teeth are small and tight. Tests have shown that beg bugs can’t get through the plastic or zipper.

“Most people keep suitcases under their beds. Experts say this is the worst place to store luggage. You may be inviting bedbugs to bed with you,” NBC 5’s Meredith Land reported.

Experts also added that after a trip, seal your luggage in garbage bags and unpack outside. Additionally, keep hard goods, such as cosmetics and souvenirs, in ziplock bags.

Some people like to improvise and such is done on sunbeds which are now said to be dangerous and may eventually lead to cancer.

Actually, younger people have to be more careful. Being at a stage where their skin cells are still delicate, turning to these sunbeds may in turn lead them towards growing skin diseases. It damages the DNA of their skin and from there, we all know that nothing good will really come out of it.

Cancer Research UK carried out research to look at the dangers of tanning salons and sunbeds.

They found in their research that 82% of sunbed users go to the tanning salon before the age of 35-years old.

The problem with this is, younger people have more delicate and sensitive skin.

Going into a tanning salon and hopping on a sunbed has been found to greatly damage your skin.

Dr. Kat Arney of Cancer Research UK stated it can damage your DNA in your skin cells, and increase skin cancer risk.

60,000 Worth of Beds Donated to Handicapped Kids

Just to give you an idea how much beds are needed these days, just look at how Beds 4 Kids owner Leonard Hilldale made the generous contribution of 60,000 worth of beds to the Handicapped Children Association, Souther Tier AIDS program. Apparently there are a lot of unfortunate children in need and among their needs are beds that can help them recuperate with their varied illnesses.

This is actually the second time that Bed 4 Kids owner Hilldale has made such a generous move in donating beds for the needy. But this one is significantly larger than the first one. But as far as his charity work is concerned, additional funding will be needed to sustain this ongoing project. There are still a lot of kids out there and while his efforts may be commendable rest assured there are still plenty of other people out there in need of these charitable acts.

Hilldale said, “I’m seriously going broke doing this, but I’ve never felt better about anything in my life. I’ve come to the conclusion that the highest purpose a person can have is to serve other people. The awards are amazing, unfortunately they’re not financial, but they are absolutely amazing.”

He is also looking for any equipment, warehouse space, and of course, good beds. And while Hilldale envisions his charity becoming a multi-million dollar outreach program one day, he knows there’s plenty of lifting to do first.

Sleep Boxes Stress Beds for the Homeless

As far as trying to wake up the government is concerned, it took a couple of students from Goshen College to help get the attention of local officials and the news as well to drive the homelessness awareness in the area. To stress their points, they used in lieu of the standard beds, cardboard boxes to make sure that what they are fighting will immediately be noticed.

Some Goshen College students are going the extra mile to raise awareness of homelessness.

These campus ministry students are sleeping in cardboard boxes Friday night to make sure people are aware of the homeless and to demonstrate the need for affordable housing.

They’re hoping this makeshift Shack City draws people in.

“I think it’s important for other people to come and see us sleeping out here, and maybe they’ll come and ask why,” said Goshen College student Phil Schmidt.

Goshen College students have been doing this for the past few years.

No other than the Sleep Council has declared that such innovations towards flying has provided a well-thought of solution for frequent travelers. The premium cabins have become a great add-on and a lot of these enhancements can be attributed to the increasing competitive markets vying for a better share of luring passengers to fly with them.

“For those passengers lucky enough to take advantage of the new flat beds on planes, the ability to adopt a more comfortable sleeping position must improve the likelihood of more refreshing rest,” commented Jessica Alexander of the Sleep Council.
