Mosquitoes and insects are the bane of most home owners, especially if they get through your protective screens. Further, there are some of these pests that carry diseases such as malaria and typhoid, further calling for the need for better protection against them.

We have seen mosquito killers and pesticides but both seem to have issues. In the future, you may see these pests getting annihilated in style, similar to how lasers kills adversaries. The idea comes from the Reagan era Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI – also known as Star Wars) concept and miniaturizes it to a level where mosquitoes are neutralized in the same manner that Soviet missiles would have received.

The technology has already been demonstrated by researchers, where they use light from a series of flashlights to illuminate mosquitoes within a fish tank. These mosquitoes’ silhouettes are then projected onto a reflective material located right behind the tank, where a zoom lens will capture the shadows and send the relevant data to a computer.

The computer will then control the laser appropriately while firing it at the bug – non-lethal lasers were used in the demonstration, but the video did show the mosquito burst into flames in a future simulation model when hit by a laser. The laser is also smart enough to tell the difference between male and female mosquitoes, targeting the latter only as they are the ones who feed on our blood while carrying diseases.

According to a study from the Oxford Centre for Respiratory Medicine in the UK, those who suffer from even mild sleep apnea are at risk of suffering a heart attack. The study will be published in the first issue for November of the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

“It was previously known that people with OSA severe enough to affect their daytime alertness and manifest in other ways are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but this finding suggests that many more people—some of whom may be completely unaware that they even have OSA—are at risk than previously thought,” said lead author of the study, Malcolm Kohler, M.D.

Sleep Deprivation a Myth?

Professor Horne, director of Loughborough University’s Sleep Research Centre is of the rather controversial opinion that sleep-deprivation is a myth. According to his study, how alert a person is in the morning doesn’t depend on his sleep but his genes!

Writing in the New Scientist, he said: “The fact is most adults get enough sleep, and our collective sleep debt, if it exists at all, has not worsened in recent times. “My assertion is that the vast majority of people sleep perfectly adequately. That’s not to say that sleep deprivation doesn’t exist. But in general we’ve never had it so good.”

Sleep Deprived Women More Likely to Fall

A new study shows that women over 70 who manage to get only five hours of sleep are at a higher risk of falling and having an accident. Researchers measured the sleep time of 2,978 women and found out those who slept less than five hours were about 47 percent more likely to have fallen more than once.

“People think getting less sleep is just a normal aspect of aging,” said Katie L. Stone, the lead author and a scientist at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute. “But you should bring it to the attention of your physician. There are options available for treatment.”

Reg Ayre from Toronto Public Health says:

“We’ve seen instances where they come back and in their luggage they’re carrying little parcels with them – you know – so that’s how it’s getting around.”

A number of spas and high end hotels are introducing sleep health programs, which not only evaluate the guests sleeping patterns but also offer sleep therapy.

According to a study conducted by researcher Dr Jennifer Parker of the University the West of England, women are more prone to nightmares. In a study of 170 volunteers, 19% of men reported a nightmare compared with 30% of women.

Said Dr. Parker:
“In terms of processing emotional information, women may be more prone to taking unresolved concerns into their sleep life.”

Doctors tend to miss Sleep Apnea and Diabetes connection

According to Virginia Zamudio-Lange, a speaker last week in Washington at the 35th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Diabetes Educators only 47 percent doctors make the connection between sleep apnea and diabetes. Hence in the United States alone 85 percent of sleep apnea cases among diabetics go undiagnosed.

“Zamudio-Lange reported that in a sleep apnea screening protocol developed at Alamo Diabetes Team in San Antonio, diabetes educators asked patients about snoring and fatigue as they made preliminary diabetes assessments. Patients who reported apnea-like symptoms were categorized as high-risk and referred for further evaluation or possible treatment.”

Though the bed bugs may not be immediately seen but can wreak havoc in our journey towards safe and sound sleep, we can always look for alternatives. This does not mean you have to use the normal aerosols everyday when you are not lying on your bed. There are solutions called bed bug barriers that can trap and kill these pesky bugs which deprive you of comfortable sleep.

There are various solutions offered by most bed companies. Companies such as Bed Bath and Beyond and Allergy Solutions Inc., have developed programs for this growing issue. Given the right emphasis, these bed bugs may yet be the thing of the past once we start to fight them with the arsenal provided by these bed companies.

“Just a couple of years ago, it was a pest that not many people had seen. Now, virtually every pest control company that we’re in contact with is dealing with regular bedbug incidents,” said Greg Baumann, vice president of Technical Services for the National Pest Management Association.

Because bedbugs are primarily associated with mattresses, some companies are now designing protective products for bedding. London Luxury LLC has just introduced a collection of “bed bug barrier bedding,” mattress and pillow protectors, available through Bed Bath & Beyond.

Allergy Solutions Inc. also sells mattress encasements, as do Protect-A-Bed and National Allergy Supply’s Bedcare line. The Harvard School of Public Health says any encasement that is used for protection from the dust mite is sufficient for much larger bed bugs.

One thing that any person would want to bring home from a trip would be the presence of bed bugs. While internal hygiene and cleaning will help keep out these dreaded bugs in our homes, you just have to consider that being careful includes the places where you come from.

Things such as your suitcases, shoes and clothes are sitting ducks to which bed bugs use as their way of commuting and invading clean homes. No one can tell about their presence although some itching and eagle-eyed observations can really do the trick.

To avoid them you just have to be careful. Once you get home after a trip, try to change your clothes and put your baggage somewhere far from beds or even sofas.

First, know that high-end hotels are not immune to bed bugs. Steritech, a pest control company, studied 700 hotels and 24 percent of them had bed bug activity.

Defend what you can control. At home, encase your mattress in plastic and make sure the zipper teeth are small and tight. Tests have shown that beg bugs can’t get through the plastic or zipper.

“Most people keep suitcases under their beds. Experts say this is the worst place to store luggage. You may be inviting bedbugs to bed with you,” NBC 5’s Meredith Land reported.

Experts also added that after a trip, seal your luggage in garbage bags and unpack outside. Additionally, keep hard goods, such as cosmetics and souvenirs, in ziplock bags.

A recent class action claims that Select Comfort Sleep Number beds are nothing more than overactive allergen mills. According to the suit, the bed’s faulty air chambers allow moisture to form under the mattress foam, providing a perfect breeding ground for mold spores.

This is not a deceiving post. It is true. NASA has offered a sum of $5000 for people to simply lay on bed for a 90 day period with limited movement. They will be required to be awake for 16 hours though and sleep the usual sleeping hours of 8.

For people who love to sleep and stay in bed, don’t be surprised if they bite the offer. $5000 is not joke and to just stay there and become an eventual guinea pig may be worth the 3-month offer.

But the downside is your body may become restless and you as a person will become bored on being observed by scientists on this experiment. With that in mind, can you even fall asleep knowing you are being observed by someone in the shadows?
