According to a study from the Oxford Centre for Respiratory Medicine in the UK, those who suffer from even mild sleep apnea are at risk of suffering a heart attack. The study will be published in the first issue for November of the American Thoracic Society’s American Journal of Respiratory and Critical Care Medicine.

“It was previously known that people with OSA severe enough to affect their daytime alertness and manifest in other ways are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease, but this finding suggests that many more people—some of whom may be completely unaware that they even have OSA—are at risk than previously thought,” said lead author of the study, Malcolm Kohler, M.D.

Professor Horne, director of Loughborough University’s Sleep Research Centre is of the rather controversial opinion that sleep-deprivation is a myth. According to his study, how alert a person is in the morning doesn’t depend on his sleep but his genes!

Writing in the New Scientist, he said: “The fact is most adults get enough sleep, and our collective sleep debt, if it exists at all, has not worsened in recent times. “My assertion is that the vast majority of people sleep perfectly adequately. That’s not to say that sleep deprivation doesn’t exist. But in general we’ve never had it so good.”

A new study shows that women over 70 who manage to get only five hours of sleep are at a higher risk of falling and having an accident. Researchers measured the sleep time of 2,978 women and found out those who slept less than five hours were about 47 percent more likely to have fallen more than once.

“People think getting less sleep is just a normal aspect of aging,” said Katie L. Stone, the lead author and a scientist at the California Pacific Medical Center Research Institute. “But you should bring it to the attention of your physician. There are options available for treatment.”

According to Virginia Zamudio-Lange, a speaker last week in Washington at the 35th Annual Meeting of the American Association of Diabetes Educators only 47 percent doctors make the connection between sleep apnea and diabetes. Hence in the United States alone 85 percent of sleep apnea cases among diabetics go undiagnosed.

“Zamudio-Lange reported that in a sleep apnea screening protocol developed at Alamo Diabetes Team in San Antonio, diabetes educators asked patients about snoring and fatigue as they made preliminary diabetes assessments. Patients who reported apnea-like symptoms were categorized as high-risk and referred for further evaluation or possible treatment.”

War veterans are perhaps the most frequent patients that Walter Reed has and it has offered the Specialized Care Program. One thing you cannot discount among war veterans would be their traumatic experiences in the ongoing war in Iraq and apparently do not be surprised to hear them screaming or even continuing the fight for peace in their dreams.

Yoga has been known to help people relax and apparently much of these war veterans could use it to help fight their traumatic stress experience.

The Specialized Care Program at Walter Reed focuses on helping service members returning from Iraq and Afghanistan leave their wartime experiences behind.

Yoga, Carnes said, has become a large part of that effort.

In conjunction with a team of psychologists, a physical therapist, two nurses, a social worker and a general internist, Carnes has worked with hundreds of service members.

The program, which serves as many as 120 service members per year, 90 percent of whom suffer from PTSD, costs about $800,000 annually. That figure covers salaries for the program’s specialists as well as travel and accommodations for the participants, such as Farley, who typically come for a three-week treatment session.

When most parents reach the point of ultimate exhaustion, chances are they will forget that they normally share their beds with their children in their infancy age. This practice is only common among parents considering that infants would normally have to be looked after and guided to sleep.

There are cases where kids sleep together with their parents when they are sick since medical attention is needed such as monitoring their temperature at times.

However, there are cases to which people get sleepy and tired to. This is uncontrollable and sometimes babies are the victims in the end, usually due to suffocation because of stuff lying around which people deem as harmless.

“Because parents can become “accidental” co-sleepers, every parent should safety-proof their bed, even if they don’t plan on sharing their bed with a baby, says James. J. McKenna, director of the University of Notre Dame’s Mother-Baby Behavioral Sleep Laboratory. “In many ways, there isn’t a single sleep location for babies,’’ notes Dr. McKenna. “Sometimes babies sleep alone, sometimes they sleep with parents. My approach is to provide as much information as possible for minimizing risks and maximizing safety whatever the sleep environment baby and parents find themselves in.’’

Nasty Bed Bites We all Hate!

Some may call it lack of observance of hygiene and cleaning the sheets when a person starts to feel uncomfortable and becomes irritated with the bed he lays on. Changing of sheets may be the immediate solution but it would be wise to check under the bed as well since these irritating bed bugs and mites may just be staying put until the cover has been clear after supposed cleaning.

Bed bug presence is obvious once people start to develop itches and marks on parts of their body. They may be hardly seen but their dirty work can be seen on the body parts of a person. Surely, they are not infections that will thrive on their prey while they are only in bed. They can be carried anywhere if people do not properly address them and have treatments in order.

How many pillows does it take for a person to sleep safe and soundly? Well for some people. More pillows mean more comfort. Some people look towards pillows rather than the bed as a means of obtaining the needed respite that most consumers look for in a quality resting habit.

So the thing is, how many pillows would a quality sleeper need? Some would want pillows at the back of their head, back or even their feet. There are some who want to have a bed to hug as a sign of security that allows them to fully rest.

The placement of pillows in the various sleeping positions is important as well. They are just not given the proper attention but once they are identified, many would be dazed at where they are required and why so.

Mothers Get Less Sleep Due To Baby Gadgets

According to a new study, the reason why new mothers get less sleep is due to their dependence on gadgets like baby monitors. While their own mothers got about six hours of sleep every night, today’s parents average just three and a half, according to Mother & Baby magazine.

Elena Dalrymple, the editor of Mother & Baby, said: “Just as a watched kettle never boils, so a watched baby never sleeps, and rigging up complicated baby monitoring systems may just be a step too far.”The pressure modern parents find themselves under is enormous, especially mums. It is primarily mums who do the night-time baby duty, yet many are also back at work full-time by the time baby is six months old. Dads need to pull their weight.

“Parents-to-be have no idea how the lack of sleep a baby brings will devastate their lives. If you’re only getting three and a half hours’ sleep night after night, and sometimes less, you’ll most likely take your frustration and anger out on your partner.

Sleep Deprivation Can Lead To Hypertension Risk in Women

According to a new study women who deprive themselves of sleep may be more likely to die of heart disease. The research conducted at the Warwick Medical School claims that women who slept five hours or less were twice as likely to suffer from high blood pressure (hypertension) than women who slept seven hours or more a night.

“Sustained sleep curtailment, ensuing excessive daytime sleepiness and the higher cardiovascular risk are causes for concern,” lead author Prof. Francesco Cappuccio from the University of Warwick’s Warwick Medical School, said in a statement.

“Emerging evidence also suggests a potential role for sleep deprivation as a predictor or risk factor for conditions like obesity and diabetes,” he added.

According to a recent study conducted in the US, its not only adults who suffer from Sleep Apnea as 4% of kids suffer from obstructive sleep apnea.

“I noticed his really heavy breathing and snoring,” said Kris Vail, Timmy’s mother. “I noticed every now and then, when I’d wake up in the middle of the night. I’d hear him just [gasp] like short breaths, and it made me a little nervous.”

In addition to Timmy’s snoring, doctors found that the youngster had enlarged tonsils which was also a sign of obstructive sleep apnea.

According to the National Sleep Foundation, other symptoms include:

Difficultly waking up Headaches during the day, but especially in the morning Irritability, agitation, aggressiveness, and crankiness Being so sleepy during the day that the child actually falls asleep or daydreams Speaking with a nasal voice and breathing regularly through the mouth

“Children who have obstructive sleep apnea — what happens to them is that when they go to sleep, they actually tend to either partially close, or completely close their airway off,” said Dr. Sumit Bhargava, attending physician in pediatric respiratory medicine and the co-director of the Yale-New Haven Pediatric Sleep Center in Connecticut.

I always need a reason not to get out from bed and the latest findings from researchers in Detroit makes me a happy girl. A study conducted by Henry Ford Hospital’s Sleep Disorders and Research Center says that human tolerance to pain is improved if we spend more time in bed! Chronic pain is often compounded by the difficulties that come with insomnia and painkillers and sleeping more give the same result

“This is important to people who are experiencing acute pain and people who have chronic pain regardless of what the cause is,” said Timothy Roehrs, who led the study. “Increasing sleep time in those people may help reduce the burden of pain in their lives.”

Lying on front with hands around pillow, head turned to one side. Sleepers like these are loud, brash and don’t often like criticisms.

Every time there are sudden natural disasters or calamities that hit one of the many regions of the world, the need to extend a helping hand in the form of clothing, goods and any sort of bedding paraphernalia are readily solicited. For the past years, countries such as the Philippines, California and just recently Peru and Jamaica are among the victims of unfortunate tragedies.Just imagine yourself residing in one of these countries. For sure, the ultimate sacrifice of comfort will be given up due to conditions brought about these series of unfortunate events. Bedding is among the basic necessities. This of course does not hold that single bed mattresses should be sent.Sleeping bags and other alternative means of pursuing sleep while such victims are in rescue centers will go a long way. To us, they may only be meant to be useful on certain occasions such as vacations. For people who have no other choice however, it is the best they can hope for.

So let us do our part and contribute to the whole rescue effort for our unfortunate brothers and sisters suffering from this tragedy by donating spare means of bedding, clothing and goods. It is something that they surely did not bargain for.

Donations can be brought to the center, at 1737 Redwood Road, in Salt Lake City from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. today. A fund has also been set up at Wells Fargo Bank in the name of the Peru Relief Effort.
