Among the people who will be entertaining the event include edBugCentral.com experts, entomologists Rick Cooper and Jeff White, who will be fielding questions and providing immediate feedback to participants during the discussion.

“The number of bed bug mentions on Twitter right now is right in sync with the recent surge in bed bug conversations taking place all across the board in other online communities,” said James Bell, CEO of Protect-A-Bed. “It all adds up to an incredibly troublesome issue and Protect-A-Bed is committed to educating the public on ways to control the problem before it gets even worse.”

The event is slated for Tuesday, June 23 at 2 p.m. EST. The reorganization plan proposed by Weintraub and Selth was accepted by their creditors, paving the way for their continued operations during these hard times.

Banner Bedding, a mattress company founded by the Scorzeill family, commenced doing business in 1926 in Ohio. In 1964, the company moved to California and has been managed by three generations of the Scorzeill family to date. The company, which originally manufactured mattresses for the wholesale market, grew to encompass 37 retail stores to compliment its factory and production facility.

The general economic downturn following Banner’s rapid expansion created a need to revisit the company’s operational methodology. On June 9, 2008, Banner filed its petition for relief under Chapter 11 of the Bankruptcy Code, choosing Weintraub & Selth to lead it through chapter 11’s unchartered waters.

Thank God for their swift actions and kudos to the people who put together a wise restructuring plan for the company’s sake!

The bed business requires efficiency and settling taxes is one of them. Apparently, the issue of proper tax computations is necessary and to simplify the process, Protect-A-Bed has selected SpeedTax as its Software-as-a-Service to help come up with efficient management of such issues.

When Protect-A-Bed expanded its sales channel in October 2008 with a new showroom in New York, and a new Chicago office in June 2008 that houses 31,000 square feet of warehouse storage, nexus was created in several states. In order to efficiently report and comply with sales tax in these states, Protect-A-Bed wanted to find an automated system that would always be up to date and run seamlessly with Sage Accpac ERP, the company’s existing business management system.

The installation was handled by Jan Goodman of Arxis Technology, a California-based provider of technology consulting services and an authorized SpeedTax Business Partner. Already working with Chamy and her staff on various projects, Goodman presented SpeedTax as the solution that would most closely meet Protect-A-Bed’s needs.

Land of Nod Bunk Beds Recalled

There has been another recall order issued on bunk beds and this time it concerns the bunk beds from the Land of Nod. The reason for the recall of the Land of Nod Cottage Beds was due to a falling hazard. Missing screws can cause the vertical slats on the guardrail of the upper bunk to detach, presenting a danger to children climbing out of the upper berth.

About 750 of the bunk beds were imported from Brazil by Land of Nod of Northbrook, Ill., and sold for about $1,000 January 2006 through January 2009 in Illinois and Washington.

The beds were sold with either white or honey-colored finishes. They can be assembled as twin or bunk beds.

Cribs Recalled for Lead Paint Poisoning

It is only fitting that one more crib manufacturer joins the growing list of furniture companies that have had to recall their products due to some defect or in this case, lead paint issues. It seems that there are still a lot of companies out there who haven’t learned their lesson and sadly, Munire Furniture has joined the list of furniture manufacturers to watch out for.

The recalled cribs and furniture are made of wood and have a rubbed black finish. Only the “Newport Rubbed Black” cribs and matching furniture manufactured in Indonesia between April 2006 and November 2008 are included in this recall. The model number, date, and country of manufacture are printed on the label attached to the side panel of the crib and the date of manufacture is on the back panel of the furniture.

Leather preference for sofa lovers are in for a surprise. While we all know that today, leather based sofas are racking in millions due to consumer preference, be aware of the end-results that can occur if you are not careful in determining what materials they come in.

This sofa which is said to be from China (again!), uses certain chemicals that can cause burns and eye problems. Much of these sofas are distributed by Land of Leather, Walmsleys and Argos.

The furniture, from China, is thought to contain a chemical which can cause burns and may be linked to some deaths.

Argos said it made recalls, Walmsleys and Land of Leather gave refunds.

As well as recalling about 30,000 sofas they had sold, Argos also said it had refunded customers.

So if you happen to buy leather sofas from any of these outlets, check out your sofa. Avoid the inconvenience brought by these defective and health hazard bringing leather sofas to your fold.

Don’t look know but another player from the garments industry has crashed the party of growing list of furniture making companies in the world today. Calvin Klein, more familiarly known for its clothing line has announced that it will launch its own line of furniture, a move that is seen to help the company branch out on other fields outside the fasionable clothing and pants line.

Calvin Klein will introduce two designer furniture lines this spring ‘Calvin Klein’ and ‘The Curator collection by Calvin Klein Home’. “Strategically, the addition of furniture is very significant for us as it further extends the Calvin Klein Home lifestyle product offering,” said Tom Murry, Calvin Klein’s president & chief executive officer.

The Calvin Klein furniture collection will be sold exclusively at Macy’s as of January, and consists of three groups – City, Weekend and Destination – with each group having a specific wood finish of walnut, whitewash and teak, respectively.

Ordinarily, being billed with poor health is something that can act as an obstacle towards achieving fulfillment. But do not tell that to Andrew Lynch, a father of three who is battling brain cancer while trying to finish a degree in furniture design in UCOL.

But the path towards it is not easy. You can just imagine the pain he has to go through to put furniture design perspectives in order. Apparently it all boils down to how far he can reach. Furniture design is an art but it requires a lot of thinking as well and perhaps one thing that is holding up Mr. Lynch is his desire to fulfill this much coveted dream in the furniture industry.

Mr Lynch won bronze in the furniture making category at the National Woodskills Festival last weekend for a vanity table he crafted during the course last year for his wife of 25 years.

“It’s where girls put all their make-up and lip stuff and put a box for their jewellery and they say there’s never enough,” Mr Lynch said with a cheeky glint in his eye.

He gave the table to Jill as a birthday present last September but she could only admire it for a single night. It had to go back on show.

Be Wary of the Winnie the Pooh Brands

In the latter part of last month, I had posted news regarding the recall of some cribs due to a potential suffocation hazard. While many have had their heads up for this line, apparently it can go as far as extending towards another line called Graco Bassinets and Winnie the Pooh brands.

Apparently, it seems that crib manufacturers have various lines and while we can easily identify one product line, it remains that related ones may more or less become dangerous as well. With that, Graco Bassinets are likewise forewarned as potential hazards and are likewise being recalled.

According to the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), some of the Simplicity Bassinets which were recalled last month could have been sold as Graco bassinets or with a “Winnie the Pooh” motif.

At least two infant deaths have been linked to a design defect in the bassinets where metal bars are further apart than permitted by the Crib Federal Safety standard. This could allow a baby’s head to become stuck, posing a substantial risk of infant strangulation.

There are still some people who prefer the old-fashioned style of furniture designs and many of them are aching to get their own for their homes. Today we are encouraged to live in a space-saving manner. It just so happens that some people have the luxury and space for such classical antiques that are still available in the market today.

The furniture has been designed based on Kashmiri art, Rajasthani art, Gujarati art, Portugal art and Mughal art. The carvings on the wood depend upon the art.

“The difference in look is due to the type of carvings. The carvings for Kashmiri art are more fine compared to the Portugal ones. In traditional furniture carvings narrate a story. We have modified the designs a bit to appeal to customers who want a touch of modernism,” said Ahmed.

Now this is something you don’t hear or see everyday. While we are looking for the people who make quality furniture available in the market, there are people in prison who happen to create furniture and they are pretty good. Convicted due to one reason or another, it is indeed rare you see that a person who could have been jailed for creating heinous crimes can actually make good furniture while serving his time.

Perhaps it is part of their rehabilitation program but at least you know that the program works and may even become one of their new career for a new lease on life when and if they are pardoned or released from jail. Who knows?

All up there are just over 4,000 prisoners in work or training – around 65 percent of the sentenced prison population.

“Eventually they are going to have to be released and one day they might be your neighbour, like to think we’ve done a good job of training them to become a modern citizen,” Peter Hosegood from the Department of Corrections says. “It’s not always the case, but we like to try.”

Boeing 747 Transformed to Jumbo Hostel

Earlier this year, there were posts regarding the new implementation of setting up beds in planes, particularly for first class accommodation. This time around, there are plans for the architecture of a Boeing 747 that will be transformed into a Jumbo Hostel. But unlike other aircrafts that have added bed accommodations, this new concept by Oscar Dios will be mainly served on the ground.

The concept is indeed something different. We all know that cases such as delays in flight make it uncomfortable for some passengers and with this Jumbo Hostel around perhaps waiting will no longer be a problem but more of a luxury for them from hereon.

Dios bought the 500-seater jumbo jet, built in 1976, from its last owner Transjet after the air operator went bust in 2002.

The Jumbo Hostel, which will remain grounded at the airport, will begin taking reservations from travellers in December.

If the venture proves successful in Sweden, Dios hopes to open more jumbo jet hostels elsewhere.

Many of us are looking towards the future and how homes would be designed by then. Apparently there is already one person who has moved forward. David McMurtry who was knighted in 2001 has spent over 30 million on Swinhay House, providing a detailed look of the ideal home that can provide class and eco-friendliness.

Just look at the design highlights of his futuristic and modern home which was architected by David Austin:

A striking solar-insulated glass atrium covers the mansion’s indoor recreation area and 80ft pool and leads the eye to a bow-shaped gallery capped by a glass turret with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside.

The house is spread across 11 levels that incorporate several self-contained apartments, a Jacuzzi and sauna, a games and TV room, two squash courts and a bowling alley. The garage is big enough for eight vehicles, and around one of the bedroom wings flows a water canal that cascades into a lagoon. Architect Andy Rathbone designed the parkland and gardens, the most striking feature of which is a curving lake, which has extraordinary bird sculptures and serves as an eco-friendly heat-exchanging system to control the temperature in the house.

As far as the quality and standards of office furniture is concerned, there are certain guidelines that governing production. Bodies such as the U.S. Green Building Council have set forth rating systems, called LEEDS, to ensure that socially responsible inputs as far as space management and use of modular wall systems used in most offices today.

In fact, there are issues such as the R’s of sustainability (Reduce and Reuse), are the leading indicators integrated in the LEEDS CI Rating System. While they are meant to help furniture manufacturers move forward soliciting some issues regarding its current version may yet be amended based on certain problems such as the flexibility of modular walls in the office setting.

Construction Waste Management 2.1 & 2.2 gives point consideration to the diverting of waste, but no such credit consideration is given when waste isn’t created in the first place by having pre-manufactured elements installed. According to Cornell University an average of one pound of drywall ends up in a landfill site for each square foot of drywall built in initial construction. Even if this goes to a recycler, it creates added transportation pollution, requires conversion energy and it still only refers to virgin drywall – not demolished.

A space made with studs and drywall may have diverted waste during initial construction, but is in no way responsive to the needs of the living, breathing business working inside it. Building out interior spaces using drywall is not sustainable. The EPA estimates changes in these inflexible spaces result in 155 pounds of material waste for every square foot. Electrical components, paint, screws, vinyl and adhesives make all that drywall difficult, if not impossible to safely recycle.

China is in the news once again! No, its not about the Olympics but another issue regarding one of their products. The Argos Bari Sofa has been identified as a furniture that can give owners potential health hazards such as allergic reactins that lead to skin diseases by simply sitting on these sofas.

Apparently all these were traced to the manufacturing state of these sofas.

Hospitals across northern Europe have treated thousands of patients with symptoms which appeared to range from skin cancer and chemical burns to severe eczema.

A study in Sweden has concluded that the skin conditions were a reaction to the gas created during the sublimation of a chemical called dimethyl fumarate. Sublimation is the conversion of a solid to a gas without passing through a liquid state.

We have heard of various beliefs as far as keeping bad spirits away from our home. Turning to Feng Shui has been one of them and apparently there is another one at the moment. They go by the name of Gargoyles.

Sounds familiar right? Well we see them in movies and museums, supposedly to fight of evil spirits. They are categorized guardians of the keep but as far as homes are concerned, would you put one in your home? The normal answer would be no. But if you are that superstitious, then maybe you would place a small one for the sake of protection and legendary beliefs. Morris is perhaps one of the inspiring and unique people who are sure to provide a lot of decorative ideas as far as home improvement is concerned.

It was the beauty of the world about him – the flowers, trees and woods – that became the essence and dominant motifs for his design company, Morris & Co, which he established in 1861. It was also the ugliness of industrial England that drove him to create beauty as a counterpoint to what he saw as the negative consequences of modern living.

The Arts & Crafts Movement grew from a reaction to the Industrial Revolution, with many of the movement’s practitioners and supporters bemoaning much of what was occurring in mid-19th century Britain, as depressing and unattractive.

While people are busy trying to figure out how to organize things inside their house, your backyard may be sitting out there waiting for you to beautify them as well. There isn’t much difference aside from the stuff you may want to use there. Apparently included here are the lights and the chairs and tables. Outside of that, conceptualizing and designing them is pretty much the same.

This is perhaps what makes people different when it comes to decorating their homes. They have to either take it one place at a time or the whole. For sure, many people would want a completely decorated home but that would include indoors and outdoors. Besides, your garden or backyard is still part of your home right?

Old chairs, tables or even the standard coffee tables that may have depreciated over time can still be used at times. There are people who want designs that can provide a mixture of antique and modern furniture and rather than buying, making use of old stuff can really make a difference.

If you want a good tip, old furniture can be remodeled as well. An old round table for instance, can be redesigned the modern way, adding some glass and a couple of varnish to certain parts that need touches for better presentation. We all know that these days, buying and selling in the real estate market has took quite a slow drive. This stems from the fact that people are tightening their belts and at the same time evaluating their investment for the worthy home designs. Cheap homes are still around but nothing sells better than a greatly presented and perhaps renovated home up in the market.

Simple makeovers and probably furnishing a property for sale can make a difference. It doesn’t have to be expensive. In short, making a home ready to live in may up the stakes a bit, not to mention that of getting good profits out of it.

After watching her house, priced at $80,000, sit on the market for about a year, Henson recently hired accredited home stager Karen Goss of Jackson to spruce up the site.

Home stagers de-clutter crowded homes, add personal touches — such as furniture and flowers — and make suggestions on how to impress sellers.

“I never had heard about staging until I had seen it on TV,” said Henson, 67, a former Jackson resident who lives in Lansing. “I called my granddaughters in Chicago, and they had seen it was out there and they suggested I should do it.”

Goss and her partner for Henson’s project, Lansing-based stager Jed Leggett, brought in used tables, a couch, framed pictures and other accents. They also planned a list of improvements that Henson could tend to on her own, including replacing the broken window, fixing a rickety porch railing and adding shrubs to the front lawn.

The home could be ready for showing in the next few weeks and Henson hopes to sell the house in a month or two.

An alternative these days deals with checking out used furniture. With all the moving and house cleaning that people make, there are bound to be great items up for grabs you can get from garage sales or of similar events.

One thing to note, used furniture are not antiques. They will have their share of being scrutinized but the point here is that of being able to properly check if they are still worthy of buying. While finances are a constraint these days, it still remains that you should buy furniture that is a reasonable find.

“My income has not changed,” said Phillips, 32, who works in the operations department of a cable company. “It’s just that things are more expensive. I’m spending more money at the grocery store. I’m spending more money on gas.”

So the single mom decided to do something that more shoppers are doing in these tough economic times.

She decided to buy used furniture.

“Budgets are tight,” she said. “I’m just trying to save a penny.”
