Making the Choice Between Single Beds or Bunk Beds

When you’re getting ready to buy children’s bedroom furniture after they have outgrown the toddler bed, you may be looking to make a choice between single beds or bunk beds. The size of your child’s room is likely to be the weighing factor here, although there may other reasons as well. Even if there is limited space in your child’s room, you may not feel the need to buy children’s bunk beds unless there is a possibility of your child having overnight guests even if it is only another family member. On the other hand, children like the idea of having two beds that belong to them and bunk beds have always been a rather “cool” thing to have.

Of course, if your child’s room is rather large, you may want to consider having two single beds or even a single bed and later perhaps you can buy a daybed for those times when friends or relative sleep over. Of course, a single bed with a trundle is another possibility for those times when you need an extra bed and though you may not think of those things when your child first moves from a toddler bed to a big boy or big girl bed, it will save you a substantial amount of money if you think ahead. Remember prices go up frequently throughout the year, so if you buy kids’ bedroom sets that are going to last at least until they become teenagers you will be making a sound economic decision.

Don’t choose something that you will need to replace in a couple years—choose children’s bedroom furniture that will last into your child’s teen years if not throughout them. More importantly, choose something your child will like rather than what you want your child to have because you liked that type of bedroom furniture when you were a child.

Dr. Deanna Soloway-Simon, medical director of pediatric emergency at Joe DiMaggio Children’s Hospital in Hollywood, Fla., is of the opinion that kids below 6 shouldn’t be put in bunk beds. Her opinion doesn’t surprise us as in the United States alone, more than 36,000 injuries from bunk bed accidents are reported every year.

“Unless you are watching your kids every minute, they can climb up on the bunk bed and, in a matter of seconds, fall,” she said. “Younger kids think they can fly. They put on a Superman cape and jump. If the cape gets caught on a rail, it could be deadly. They could hang themselves.”

What Size to Choose?

Most of us grow up sleeping on a twin sized bed. Choose a size bed that will fit your room. Don’t go for a full sized bed just because you’re single at the moment, because you never know how long you will be! Many people go with the largest size of bed that they can fit in their bedroom. Remember: you don’t want the bed to take up the whole bedroom. You need to leave enough room to move around without fear of stubbing your toes.

What about storage?

If you have a small bedroom, you may want to choose a bed that has storage available underneath it, so that you can store things easily without cluttering your room. If you plan on having friends sleep over often look towards a trundle bed, or possibly getting a daybed that has a pop up trundle underneath it.

Metal or Wood?

The two classic materials that beds are made from are wood and metal. The metal and iron beds come in a wide variety of styles that are extremely duarable, while wood beds always bring a classic sensibility to them. While you may want to use a traditional style mattress with a box spring foundation, platform beds that only require a mattress are increasingly popular and are a bit less expensive.

Lines

You might not think that there are lines on a bed frame, but there are. Each curve and side of a bed frame is a line. If you prefer curved lines, look for sleigh beds or an arched panel bed. If you like straight lines go for the missionary style bed or a horizontal slat bed.
