Prehistoric Beds – Not Built for Comfort

Dohney Bed - Hillsdale Furniture

Have you ever wondered what your ancient ancestors slept on at night? Certainly, they didn’t have mattresses as we know them, with spring coils, water, or air inside. It could not have been comfortable for them, at least not compared to modern beds. Without the creation of furniture like our modern iron beds and platform beds, how did Cro-Magnum man sleep without tossing and turning at night?

In history, man killed animals and beasts for meat and furs, the latter of which were used for clothing and bedding. Tossed upon the ground or across elevated stone tables in thick layers, these men were sometimes able to build a bed almost equivalent to modern platform beds, though still not as thick and comfortable as those you’ll find from manufacturers like Fashion Bed Group.

While not having the four poster canopy bed that is available today, some of the ancients did use animal pelts to sequester themselves separately from everyone else, to afford themselves privacy. This was important especially for newlywed couples and women who were having children. Later on, in Medieval times, the canopy bed was refined with silks and laces that made the privacy of a bed less confining and claustrophobic.

Similarities to modern leather headboards are also found in ancient history, with animal pelts hung from stone walls in caves and more pelts piled beneath on the floor of the cave to create a bed for a man and his woman and any children they had. Today’s headboards are more sophisticated and well put together, with wood upholstered with leather to create a luxury. You can find these through Fashion Bed Group as well, at really affordable prices. While prehistoric man didn’t have the modern comforts we find today, many of the designs we see today date back in some way to what they did have, making it a little easier to envision the past.
