No, this is not a bar of soap. In fact this translucent object is actually called the Soap Light. As the name suggests, the Soap Light is a portable lamp which charges when you dock it in its base. Once charged, you can place it anywhere and use its touch interface to dim or bright the light.

DIY: Make a Fabric Lamp

Make a Fabric Lamp that is easy to sew, easy to assemble and shouldn’t set you back for more than $20. This is what you would require:
Materials:

1. Fabric – 1/2 yard will be plenty
2. Fusible Interfacing – Optional. If you use a heavy fabric you don’t need this. I used a thin cotton.
3. Matching Thread
4. Polyfill
5. Lampshade (not pictured)
6. Light bulb (not pictured)
7. (1) Fence Post Cap – This will be the base of the lamp.
8. (1) All Thread Lamp Pipe Kit , 12″ – This kit will include the 2 washers and 2 nuts you will need.
9. (1) 8′ Lamp Cord Set
10. (1) Lighting Fixture Socket
11. (4) Adhesive Feet – For base of lamp to allow for cord clearance

The Adesso Starburst Floor Lamp is on sale at the Amazon website. One can order it for $199.99 and save $100, making it quite a decent deal. The lamp measures 8 x 8 x 28.5 inches and is made of metal with a chrome stick pole and flat round base with a dark gray tinted translucent shade.

DIY: Geiger Lamp

Make a Geiger Lamp with a cool illuminated Dial. Here is a list of materials one would require:

* 1 survey meter ( I used a CDV-715)
* A cord with a plug
* White wire
* Black Wire
* A rotary switch (On/off not reostat)
* Wire nuts
* Electrical tape
* Feet (4)
* Nuts (4)
* Lock nuts (4)
* Tubing with lock washers and nuts
* Lamp socket
* Hot glue

The meter was acquired from a friend that works for an agency that was disposing of non-functional meters. You may also be able to pick one up at a surplus store, an auction or through a catalog. I bought a lamp at the thrift store to get the lamp tubing I needed.

Optional materials for LED illumination of the dial:

* LED
* Wires
* Batteries (3 volts in total)
* Scrap metal (I used a penny)
* Plastic container (I used a pill bottle)
* 2 rubber bands (Not pictured)
* A rotary switch (On/off not reostat)
