Japan has been feeling the effects of the triple whammy that hit them (earthquake, tsunami and nuclear issues) and surely, we know how hard it would be to make the necessary adjustments in order to live right. The Leafbed should be something worthy to check out. Apparently this is one bedding solution that makes use of familiar boxes or cardboards to render aid to the ones who need sleep.

The Leafbed, Humanitech’s 2010 first prize winner for innovation in humanitarian emergency situations, may be a no-brainer but it does serve its purpose. If you were found to be on the same footing as the devastation to hit Japan, having a Leafbed could be more of a luxury rather than an option.

“Dado” Shelves

Here is a functional table for people who fail to keep track of their incoming messages. Designed by Shawn Bonkowski, this is a table filled with boxes which pop up each time a message comes in. If you want to discard the message, all you have to do is push it back down again.

In summary, this is a table that could be useful for people who are always on the go or flooded with calls. You may even call it an overgrown answering machine with a twist. The message table will be exhibited at the Victoria & Albert Museum, at the Salone del Mobile 2005 in Milano.

Here is a familiar design and icon from the Super Mario Brothers classic game. If you will recall, those boxes which Mario bumps, you are bound to find this Fire Ball Flower icon as one of the abilities that make him spew some fire. Unfortunately this is a pillow design only so don’t expect to hurl fire balls at anyone, even your enemies. The best you can do is throw the pillow and that is about it. Parts needed:

* 3 X Ikea Expedit Bookshelves ($90 each)
* 2 X Ikea Observator Cross Braces 393 Version ($5 each) – Be sure to select the 39″ version, not the 28″
* Queen Size Mattress
* Queen Size Bed Frame or 80″ X 58 5/8″ sheet of wood

Optional items:

* Ikea Lekman boxes ($12 each; 8 fit in each bookcase; I only put 8 Lekman boxes in the bookcase at the foot of the bed; Ikea has many storage options for the Expedit Bookcases)
* 3 X Mat Shelf Liners sized at least 15.5″ X 59″ ($5-8 each)

Next time instead of purchasing wall posters to decorate a wall space use old wood panels from wine boxes. You don’t need to cover the entire wall space, as even a smaller section will make a dramatic statement.

Set a tea box on end, then cut off and discard the top half. Cut a door opening with a window in the front panel and wedge plastic berry basket “racks” in the oven. Glue on pieces of cardboard for a stove top and control panel, then cover the entire stove with aluminum foil. Attach paper fastener “controls” glue on bottle cap “burners” and tape on a paper clip “door handle.”

DIY: The Perfect Dollhouse

Here is a different way of covering up tissue paper to add some spice to your home. Through the years, we have been accustomed to various forms of designs as far as enhancing our tissue cover requirements. Rather than a standard covering where some would use beads or boxes, check out this bomb design type tissue cover that is bound to capture the attention of your guests.

How do you get the tissue? Just pull out the tissue showing at the fuse part. A great addition to rooms that need a lift in ambiance and design.

The bomb tissue roll cover is a bit more entertaining than the usual array of stylish yet somewhat affordable that find their way into my house. Tissues are accessed via the fuse, you pull it, and more fuse comes out. It’s a vicious cycle.

Another new addition to the IKEA website is the LILLESAND bed frame. Once can purchase it directly from the IKEA US website for $229.00 According to IKEA the space under the bed can be utilized with  their underbed storage boxes and the HAMAR midbeam is adjustable in length to fit all our beds.

Here’s a way to make a bed using some boxes. Not exactly the best way of making a bed but if you have a lot of boxes and not enough cash, this might get you through for a couple of months.

A new bed for $10 in 5 minutes.

Having blown $300 on a mattress, I wasn’t about to blow another $300 on a bed frame or box springs. I had all these archive boxes that I used for moving, so here’s a cheap-ass substitute.

Its as strong as a regular bed, environmentally-friendly and great for people who move frequently. And you instantly have 10 boxes worth of storage space under your bed!

Add mattress. The bonus is that this bed, with the mattress, is exactly the same height as the bed next to it (which is a standard bed frame from Ikea).

If you don’t even want to buy a mattress, you can tape together a bunch of free padded envelopes from Fed-Ex, like this guy: http://www.fedexfurniture.com/

When you want to move, just flatten all the boxes, or you can use them to move!
