If you have been looking for another way to throw away your old mattresses, don’t look at the landfill but look for solutions like this one where the author cuts/hacks his old mattresses into comfy sofas/couches.  Not only are we throwing away too many spring mattresses per year, these can add up to a lot of landfill space.

Why not recycle/re-make them into comfortable sofas?  Customize them to your liking, old mattresses can prove to be great recyclable furniture.

Certainly a similar hack with memory foam mattresses would be easier and make some great couches too.

The overall plan is to cut out a middle section of both the mattress and the box springs leaving two ends for each of the same size. Then closing up the ends and sewing covers for them out of canvas and upholstery fabric. The basic idea is pretty simple but it is a bit of work and requires both a Dremel tool (or something to cut the metal springs) and a sewing machine.

DIY – How to Cut/Hack Old Mattresses into Sofas/Couches!

Air New Zealand is offering something appealing for the weary travelers with their beds solutions inside their Boeing 777-300ER. These skycouches have heavy-duty footrests that can be locked alongside the seats and extend how much space you have to work with.

Now as far as comfort is concerned, they may not be 100%. These are three seats that fold down into a bed and in cases the flight is full, these beds would not be applicable. So the solution is perhaps to make sure you get one row of three seats to make sure you get a bed for long flights.

To help avoid all that, Air New Zealand says a pair of travelers can purchase the third seat in their row for half price. Only the first 11 rows of coach will have these skycouches meaning it is a first-come first-served basis.
