Today we hear a lot of fire mishaps that occur in the home. While some are fortunate if the firemen are able to come early and extinguish the flames, you cannot help but wonder what if they would be late. In case of a fire, what would you do? Water is available but that is no guarantee that you can completely put a fire in control.

Fire extinguishers are normally familiar in offices and commercial areas. But to some condominiums, they are a necessity for tenants. Many would say it is a form of exaggeration, being a requirement to which most condo owners can do without but the fact is that it is for the safety of the tenant overall.

Fires in secluded places are hard to be reached by firemen. With high rise condos, accessibility is put into question. But while that is the case for condos, the location of some homes may suffer the same issues as well.

Don’t Just Plug Christmas Lights at Will

With barely 35 days to go, the Christmas season is coming fast and for sure all households are starting to decorate their homes to get that festive mood up despite the hard times. The use of extensive Christmas lights have been discouraged but we still see a lot of people putting them up to at least show some Christmas spirit and perhaps forget the hard times befalling us for 2009.

Most home owners cannot be stopped from doing so but just make sure you don’t overdo it as far as parallel plugging of these lights is concerned. Also, make sure that the Christmas lights you are buying are of good quality as we have seen a lot of homes go up into flames due to faulty wiring from inferiorly made Christmas lights.

As a reminder, keep these things in mind:

1. Connect at the most two Christmas light wires when you plug in. Making it more than may overload your electric outlets
2. Check the wires of the Christmas lights. The thinner they are the higher the risk of fires coming from electrical shortages. They must be thick enough to carry the electrical load.
3. Check the plugs. They should not be easily bendable. If so, look for another. They are poor conductors of electricity when plugged in and may short circuit.

We all want to buy cheap things. But in this case, cheap things may cost us more and it includes our homes or even our lives.
