Owe it to the creative minds of specialists like Nathan Christopher who seems to be putting his degree in natural resource management to good news.
If you are pressed for space and have limited options as far as what stuff to put in your dorm, check out Leo and Katelyn. They are not people. They are product lines offered by La-Z-Boy, offering you better options to live conveniently without eating up space with the traditional bulky furniture designs we are accustomed to. Leo is a storage ensemble that allows you to have a seat or stool while at the same time serving as storage. “Stash books, magazines, DVDs and anything you don’t want mom and dad to see when they visit your home away from home.” Katelyn on the other hand is a full-size sleeper available in different fabrics.
Turning to visual aids to help educate a child is one thing you will notice in any nursery. While we look at posters that make use of animals or objects that are easily associated to a certain letter, here is something that associates the alphabet with furniture images. Ideally this may sound like a different way to teach children associating their ABC’s with the standard characters we know of today. But if it works, it can help a child easily distinguish the various furniture designs and images that they normally see in their homes from beds to sofas. As you are well aware, we spend a lot of time looking for great nursery decor, especially when it comes to alphabet posters. I think that this one by Italian graphic designer Francesco Dondina makes an interesting addition. A father of two, Dondina is also a professor of visual communication at the Design Faculty of the Politecnico in Milan. At $13, this gem is quite a steal.
Eileen Gray is a known name in the furniture design business. She has given a new meaning towards conceptualization and design and a lot of it were introduced in the market in the 1900’s. During these times, modern furniture designs were conceived as mechanical and were it not for the vested interest of one Andre Putman, perhaps none of us would see the contemporary designs that are sure hits today. The appreciation of Gray’s performance back then were perhaps not seen as the tomorrow of modern design. Today however, we can see similarities of her concepts and then some, which are surely ideal stuff that anyone would want in their homes today. She designed a new range of furniture for the home and in line with the Bauhaus and Modernists’ philosophies, moved away from creating exclusive, one-off pieces, instead preferring to create furniture that was simple, refined and functional and that allowed for mass production. One small table in particular, called the E-1027, is one of Gray’s most recognised pieces. Also the name Gray gave to her San Tropez house, the E-1027 was small, round and amazingly versatile and, today is considered one of the icons of modern design. Also the name Gray gave to her San Tropez house, the E-1027 was small, round and amazingly versatile and, today is considered one of the icons of modern design. She also designed chairs, settees, desks and storage units for her home.

Sadly, her clients initially shunned Gray’s new direction and interest in her work waned. Just before her death, however, Andre Putman, a prominent French designer, revived interest in Gray’s designs and obtained a licence to manufacture several of them. Exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and the Museum of Modern Art in New York followed.

For most people, the issue of having to spend a lot for remodeling or redesigning any part of their home is a cause for delay in being able to get the ideal designs today. With the rising cost of purchasing home furniture, designs and materials, people are bound to shelve it for now. But what if you can get it all for a mere $500? Not a bad deal if you can come up with a good design for a room right? All it really takes is patience and resourcefulness as shown by two design students who were able to transform a guest room into a modern designed room only the financially able can do so. The designers began by hunting for furnishings to replace the pieces they were removing, as well as accessories to liven up the space. Thrift stores and antique shops offered a lot of decorative inspiration, as did two significant pieces of furniture: a small walnut coffee table with dovetail inlays cost $10 at the Goodwill store in Cambridge; their most expensive purchase was a $100 credenza from Eddie’s Furniture in Somerville. “We talked him down from $130,” Boyer says. (Paying in cash made it easier to get a lower price.)

Boyer and Cabanilla discovered some suitable accessories – such as a large mirror – hidden in the couple’s storage areas. They also added a few newer items, like wooden shelves from IKEA that mount to the wall to save on floor space. The final, redesigned room includes all of these pieces set off by walls newly painted light beige, one of which has a barely perceptible metallic glaze on it that adds a golden glow to the room.
