• 10,000 years ago – in the Neolithic period, people began sleeping on primitive beds made from branches
• 3400BCE – the Egyptian pharaohs first discovered the benefits of raising a pallet off the ground. King Tutankhmen had a bed of ebony and gold, while common people heaped palm bows in the corner of rooms
• Roman Empire – first developed a luxurious bed decorated with gold silver or bronze
• 13th century – canopies were suspended from beams by ropes
• 15th century – the wooden four poster bed was introduced and were enormous with carved pillars up to 18in and had elaborate engravings in the wood
• 18th century – designed cast iron beds similar to what we now associate as a bed, they discovered a sleeping space that was less attractive to bugs
• 1900 – William Lawrence Murphy invented the space saving Murphy Bed that folded into a wardrobe
• 1940s – futons were introduced to North America, although they had been around for hundreds of years on the Orient
• 1960s – the water bed was developed and adjustable beds became popular
• 1980s – air beds were introduced
• 1999 – the king size bed became the most popular bed size in America
