Another cool lamp, which I recently came across was the ‘Goodbye Edison’ lamp by London designer Fx Balléry. The idea is to make use of LED sources  and I personally love the unique styling. Quite a relief from the good old electric light bulb, don’t you think?

IKEA KALLT Silhouette Light

Make your own Pocket Sized Lantern and battle power cuts with style. It can also act as a portable source of light and it doesn’t require battery.

Step 1 Things you’ll need:
1. Jar: Here I used a small jar of jam from some airline. The only real requirement is that the jar has a metal lid. Ideally use only those jars with no paint on the lid if you want to avoid unpleasant fumes.

2. Wick: I happened to have a wick from an old lantern that was lying around, but you could just as easily use a shoelace (plastic ends cut off) or any rolled up piece of cloth. *TIP* You’ll want to use 100% cotton shoelaces, not synthetic. Synthetic will melt instead of burn and could lead to serious injuries. Thanks to user “Sedition”

3. Knife: I used my Leatherman c305 to cut a hole in the lid of the jar.

4. Lamp Oil: This will be used.

“First thing to do is to add all the support stuff for PIC, so I need power supply, download socket and reset. I also need to arrange the outputs in simple to use rows. This defined the size of the PCBs so I spent as much time as I could reducing the size until I couldn’t get it any smaller.”

“The next step was to place the 20 LEDs in the dot-matrix, connectign all the anodes in columns and all the cathodes in rows. This is impossible to do without using link wires unless your using double layer board or double sided board. I wasn’t so I will be using link wires.”

DIY: LED Dot-Matrix Display

Dynamic Lamp

Make Milk Bottle LED Lights at home and light up  your place. The Arduino Controlled lights consume very little power and making them extremely easy.

To manufacture the lights themselves, you will need:

PPE milk bottles
Sheet of 3mm clear acrylic
2 core electrical cable (or speaker wire will do – it can be fairly light duty since it will only take about 12v and very little current, depending on how you design your circuit).
LEDs
Resistors
Solder
Heat shrink tubing
An old transformer (wall wart to Americans), plus socket+plug to go with it.
Braided copper wire
Solid core bell wire
Zip ties

Tools you will need:

Drill
Hole cutter (matched to the width of your milk bottle caps – see step 2)
Assorted tiny drill bits
Junior hacksaw (depending on what you use as a housing)
Screwdrivers
Wire strippers
Side cutters/Wire clippers
Soldering iron
Multimeter
Third hand (vital for soldering components together)
Desoldering wick (if you salvage any components from other devices)
Crocodile clip leads (for testing/prototyping).
