Sleep is an odd occurrence, we’ve slept since time began and we do it every night, yet we still don’t know exactly why we sleep. As technology has dramatically advanced in the past 50 or so years, we now know the different stages we go through when we sleep. During the early stages of sleep you are still relatively awake when the brain is producing small and fast waves, once it starts to relax these waves become slower and it’s during this time that you are not asleep but may experience strange and vivid sensations known as hypnagogic hallucinations like someone calling your name or a falling sensation. You may also experience a myoclonic jerk, which is when you suddenly become startled for no reason. Stage 1 – lasting approximately five to 10 minutes, this is a relatively light sleep that is the transition period between being awake and being asleep. The brain produces very slow brain waves and if you are awoken during this stage you’re likely to not remember being asleep.

Stage 2 – for around 20 minutes your brain will produce bursts of rapid brain wave activity where body temperature starts to decrease and the heart rate slows down.

Stage 3 – the period between light sleep and very deep sleep, this is a transitional period where deep and slow brain waves start to emerge.

Stage 4 – lasting for approximately 30 minutes, this stage is known as delta sleep because of the slow brain waves that occur during this period. Bed wetting and sleep walking usually happen at the end of this stage

Stage 5 – known as rapid eye movement (REM) because our eyes move under our eyelids, this is the deepest of sleeps where most dreaming takes place. There is an increased rate of respiration and brain activity, however the voluntary muscles become paralysed.

Our sleep patterns do not progress through these stages in sequence, as we move in and out of light and deep sleep throughout of the night. Sleep begins in stage 1 and moves into stages 2, 3 and 4, we then repeat stage 3 and 2 before we enter REM sleep. Once this last stage is over, your body usually returns to stage 2 sleep and cycles through all stages around four or five times a the night.

On average we go into REM sleep approximately 90 minutes after falling asleep, the first cycle may only last a short amount of time but each becomes longer and can last up to an hour as the night progresses.

So as you drop off to sleep tonight, wrapped up cosy in your bed, you may know what stage of sleep you are at, but try not to think about it too much or you might end up struggling to get to sleep!

Much of us want to know what goes on in bed when we sleep and while these may occur at times where we least note them to be, it would be best to have a handy device as the Remy Alarm Blanket which monitors your movements and alerts you as well. This is a good device to use especially if you are the type who wants to monitor your sleep movements in bed. Designer Dasha Anokhina has created a concept that takes Glo pillow’s design to a new level: REMY is a whole dawn-simulating alarm blanket. The system monitors your sleeping movements with a bedside camera. Then, near your chosen alarm time, the blanket begins to light up with an image representing your sleep pattern, waking you as if the sun was rising. And if you’re really into self-analysis, it even saves your sleep data to a USB stick so you can review it later. (via Gizmodo via Yanko Design) Remy Alarm Blanket

This is not a deceiving post. It is true. NASA has offered a sum of $5000 for people to simply lay on bed for a 90 day period with limited movement. They will be required to be awake for 16 hours though and sleep the usual sleeping hours of 8. For people who love to sleep and stay in bed, don’t be surprised if they bite the offer. $5000 is not joke and to just stay there and become an eventual guinea pig may be worth the 3-month offer. But the downside is your body may become restless and you as a person will become bored on being observed by scientists on this experiment. With that in mind, can you even fall asleep knowing you are being observed by someone in the shadows? (Source) NBC25 $5000 a Month to Stay in Bed?

Babies are known to have their share of wetting their bed. These are normal occurrences since they usually have to be trained prior to understanding how to control these personal qualms. But this study relates it with loud snoring, something that will surely be an issue for infants that has to be addressed. It is not plainly an issue about snoring but rather about looking at the whole picture for our kids’ sakes. “Our findings were really an eye-opener,” said study co-author Dr. David Gozal, director of the division of pediatric sleep medicine at the University of Louisville, in Kentucky. “Why children with bed-wetting have high levels of this hormone; that will require a bit more research.” About 9 percent of boys and 6 percent of girls at age 7 have trouble sleeping through the night without wetting the bed, according to the U.S. National Institutes of Health. The problem — which affects about 5 million American children — runs strongly in families. Nighttime bed-wetting, which is also called enuresis, is not the fault of the child or parent. For some reason, the child’s brain isn’t responding to normal cues to wake up and empty the bladder. While laying on one’s back, the Atlas-T Pillow is designed to maintain 16 degrees between the cervico-cranial (Atlas) junctions, which widens the airway openings, and thereby stops or alleviates snoring.
We have all been focusing on the ideal and unique beds offered in the market today yet we tend to forget the other decorative partners such as chairs, couches and sofas that go with them inside our houses and bedrooms. We all know how sofas and couches are seen as good alternative sleeping places and perhaps with the ideal design and make, we can see ourselves sleeping on them rather than our beds. It is a possibility. There are people who would prefer their sofas or couches over the proper bed space. The bottom line is comfort. While we all know that beds are made for sleeping, sleeping without comfort will totally negate why we have them in our rooms. Thus, the second option of having ideal couches and sofas come into play. Need a good design? Maybe you can put in your own idea. Check out this video. For some however, the reality is that they use these hammocks as a form of bed as well, especially if they are outdoors or roughing it in a sense. People find themselves sleeping like babies, probably because its swaying motion likens it to like a crib where babies would usually cradle themselves to sleep.
