Since we already have the Web to Hobby Servo connection working well for other installations, using a hobby servo was the desired approach. Most homebrew CNC XY tables use motors like steppers and acme screw drives, but we don’t need that much precision, and they are a bit slower than we’d like. The Hobby Servo approach also gives us absolute position control, and helps keep the cost down too – using industrial servos would be great, but a lot more expensive.”

Here is a cool bed that has been made from pipes. To make this bed you require the following:

*  1 1/2″ schedule 40 iron pipe: Available at plumbing/hardware stores. Rather heavy. You can buy 10′ lengths and then cut it yourself. Note that 1 1/2″ pipe is not actually 1 1/2″ in diameter. It’s really closer to 1 7/8″!

* Hacksaw/pipecutter/chopsaw: For cutting the pipe down

* Couplers: You can buy these from mcmaster carr, they are used to build railings. They are sometimes called “speed rail” or “speedrail”. Search the online mcmaster.com for “speedrail” and order the couplers you want. I got mine for free and they were all of the “4 outlet crossover” kind so I used only those but theres more suitable configurations.

* Allen wrench: for opening & closing the couplers

* Plastic pipe-end covers: get these at the place with the pipe, they protect your floor

* 1×8 wood panels for making the slats, and 2×4′s for holding the slats together

Here are some facts about The Desk:

* Approximately 35,000 LEGO bricks were used. This includes almost all the pieces from 32 Blue Tubs (#3033), almost 300 (!) small baseplates (8×16 studs), and 63 blue plate packs from LEGO Shop-at-Home. A few other pieces were also bought from private collectors (226 tiles so the drawers could slide, et cetera).
* The desk weighs about 120 pounds, I think. I have not actually weighed it… but I think that is close.
* About 7 pounds of glue were used. Brand: Oatey, All-Purpose (PVC, CPVC, ABS) Glue.
* The desk has the following dimensions (inches, WxHxD): 60″ x 29.5″ x 30″.
* It has 7 working drawers (six small, one large).
* It has a folding lid in the top that conceals a hole for computer cables to drop through.
* Yes, the top is bumpy — studs up. I offered to make the top smooth, but the client specifically requested otherwise. Whatever. I also offered to build a retractable keyboard tray in the front, but that was not wanted. Nor a mosaic of the company logo on the top or sides.

DIY: Hoodie Laptop Sleeve

Ingredients:

* Clay saucer
* Clean, damp sand
* Hurricane chimney
* Candle (make sure it is shorter than the top of the hurricane glass; I use something called “utility candles” — they seem to be the perfect size)
* Heavy twine (optional)
* Flowers (optional)

You can make these lanterns more special by arranging flowers in the damp sand around the hurricane chimney to make a centerpiece. Two or three of these on your table makes for a really special glow.

Using heavy twine, you can hang these to have more room on your table:

Use 3 strands of twine at least three feet long — you don’t want the twine to catch fire. Tie the twine in a knot at both ends and balance the saucer with sand, hang, and then add the candle and the hurricane chimney.

Make your own Designer Key Rack by using materials that are usually lying around the house. Follow the instructions posted at Curbly and let us know how this little DIY project went.

Excerpt from the post:
“The designer version is made out of a slab of oak (15″ x 2.3″ x 2″) that has a cavity the width of a key plunged down the middle. A quick measurement of my keys told me most are about 1/16″ to 1/8″ thick, about the same thickness as a saw blade. You know what that meant….to the table saw!”

Milk Plex, I used a 16 x 18.5 x 1/8″ lightbox top I had around
Vinyl with fuzzy backing, I used 3.5 yds Gray for the back (to match the straps) and 3.5 yds White for the top.
20 x 24 piece of clear .40 mil pvc sheeting to water resist the top.
2 yd Webbing for the handle and strap
2 plastic buckles
Velcro for the battery compartment.
5 AA NI-MH 1.2V 2300MA batteries.
6 AA cell holder with snap connection.
Cord w/9 V clip to 2.1MM x 5.5MM (+) center.
A push button canopy switch.
Jack to Jack connector 2.1MM x 5.5MM

DIY: Make a Water Resistant LED Picnic Blanket
