Shades or blinds always seem to enhance a room and can infuse an ethereal vibe into any living space. You can now make your own rice paper roller shades and for more information head over here.

Materials:
rice paper
1 wooden dowels
2 white cloth tape
roller shade hardware

Tools:
tape measure
carpenters square
carpenters straight edge
shears
pencil
sewing machine
crosscut saw for cutting wood dowels
screwdriver or screw gun for mounting hardware

The Measuring:
You start out measuring your windows for roller shades; width and height. Heres where you need to decide where they will be mounted; on the wall or trim (outside mount) or in between window casing or shelving (inside mount) and which side of the window you want the controls. At least 13/4 depth is needed for an inside mount shade. The paper will be narrower than this overall measurement by 1 to 1 1/2 to allow for hardware. The shade is limited by the width of the rice paper. The widest Ive found the rice paper on a roll is 38.

The Rice Paper:
You need rice paper sold by the yard on a roll. You will need a piece of paper the length of your window plus 12. Great resources for paper are Mikis Paper, Kozo Arts, and Flax.

The Hardware Store:
Pick up 1 dowels for the hem. They will be cut to the width measurement of your finished shade. Also cloth tape, wood screws, and any tools you lack. Some of my favorite hardware stores are Cliffs in The City (thats San Francisco) or Pastime in the East Bay.

The Rollers:
Order the rollers from a custom roller shade shop. Ask them to make the allowance for inside or outside mount shades. Order a bead pull, not a spring loaded roller.
Specify left or right control. In S.F. try Art Shade Shop. In Berkeley, Alcatraz Shade Shop.

Wall Art is tricky business. Not all of us can afford works of art and posters at time, look extremely clichéd. DIY Life gives some great tips on how to liven up any wall space without burning a hole in your pocket. Excerpt: * Wall decals are perhaps little over-hyped, but they’re still a cool way of adding interest to a wall. Although cheaper than original wall art, these will still set you back a few bucks. If the pre-made ones are too rich for your blood, try this craftster’s trick of using spray starch to adhere fabric cut-outs to the wall. * The cover of this month’s Blueprint magazine features a nifty wall art project (pictured here) made from thrift store picture frames. Basically, you get a bunch of empty frames of different shapes and sizes, paint them all the same color, and hang them. I think white frames against a colored wall would really pop; especially if the wall had white molding. Another interesting take on the project might be to use frames of all the same shape and paint all but one of them the same color. * Silhouettes are popping up everywhere on the craft scene … Continue reading →

Wall Art is tricky business. Not all of us can afford works of art and posters at time, look extremely clichéd. DIY Life gives some great tips on how to liven up any wall space without burning a hole in your pocket.

Excerpt:

* Wall decals are perhaps little over-hyped, but they’re still a cool way of adding interest to a wall.
* Silhouettes are popping up everywhere on the craft scene these days. The good news is they’re really easy to make. Get some interesting wrapping paper, add a silhouette downloaded from Stencilry, stick it in a frame, and you’re good to go.
* Ikea’s usually good for a bargain, but their fabric wall hangings are way overpriced. Make your own by buying some interesting fabric and using a staple gun to attach it to an old picture frames. A heavier weight fabric will probably work best – check out reprotdepot.com or cheapthreads.com for some wall-worthy prints. As for frames, might I suggest Ikea’s Ram? (Ikea’s got a pretty good selection of fabrics too).
