The Measuring:
You start out measuring your windows for roller shades; width and height. Here�s where you need to decide where they will be mounted; on the wall or trim (outside mount) or in between window casing or shelving (inside mount) and which side of the window you want the controls. At least 13/4� depth is needed for an inside mount shade. The paper will be narrower than this overall measurement by 1� to 1 1/2� to allow for hardware. The shade is limited by the width of the rice paper. The widest I�ve found the rice paper on a roll is 38�.

The Rice Paper:
You need rice paper sold by the yard on a roll. You will need a piece of paper the length of your window plus 12�. Great resources for paper are Miki�s Paper, Kozo Arts, and Flax.

The Hardware Store:
Pick up 1� dowels for the hem. They will be cut to the width measurement of your finished shade. Also cloth tape, wood screws, and any tools you lack. Some of my favorite hardware stores are Cliffs in The City (that�s San Francisco) or Pastime in the East Bay.

The Rollers:
Order the rollers from a custom roller shade shop. Ask them to make the allowance for inside or outside mount shades. Order a bead pull, not a spring loaded roller.
Specify left or right control. In S.F. try Art Shade Shop. In Berkeley, Alcatraz Shade Shop.

DIY: Platform Bed With Danish Inspiration

Make a sturdy platform bed from plywood by spending approximately $60-$90.
Materials Needed:
3 – 2×6 Boards 10′ feet long
1 – 4×4 Post 32″ inches to 40″ inches long
1- 2×4 Stud
12 – Hex Bolts 3/8 by 6″ inches long
12 – Hex 3/8 Nuts
24 – Cut Washers for 3/8 Bolts

DIY: Strong and Tough Platform Bed

Here is a cool bed that has been made from pipes. To make this bed you require the following:

*  1 1/2″ schedule 40 iron pipe: Available at plumbing/hardware stores. Rather heavy. You can buy 10′ lengths and then cut it yourself. Note that 1 1/2″ pipe is not actually 1 1/2″ in diameter. It’s really closer to 1 7/8″!

* Hacksaw/pipecutter/chopsaw: For cutting the pipe down

* Couplers: You can buy these from mcmaster carr, they are used to build railings. They are sometimes called “speed rail” or “speedrail”. Search the online mcmaster.com for “speedrail” and order the couplers you want. I got mine for free and they were all of the “4 outlet crossover” kind so I used only those but theres more suitable configurations.

* Allen wrench: for opening & closing the couplers

* Plastic pipe-end covers: get these at the place with the pipe, they protect your floor

* 1×8 wood panels for making the slats, and 2×4′s for holding the slats together

DIY: Pipe Bed

“To make a one-person hammock, you’ll need about two pounds (three, if you want a two-person sling) of seine twine, No. 40 to No. 46; two metal rings 2 to 3 inches in diameter (use welded steel or brass); two hardwood support bars measuring 1 1/2-by-1 1/2-by-33 inches each (make them 48 inches long for the double hammock); a smooth gauge stick that’s about 3/4-by-1 1/2-by-12 inches; and a netting shuttle.”

Staining and finishing wood furniture may require a certain expertise however since its inexpensive, it completely worth it don’t you think? HGTV has a great post on how to learn the technique and we recommend you pay a visit to the post.

# Begin with bare wood. Prepare the wood by first sanding it with a coarse grit (lower number) sandpaper and then with a medium or fine (higher number) sandpaper. Continue sanding until the wood is smooth to the touch and the uneven areas are removed. Be sure to sand with the grain of the wood, not against it. Wipe the wood with a tack cloth between sandings to remove dust.
# Next, clean the wood with a rag or sponge dampened with mineral spirits. This helps bring out the color variation in the wood.

DIY: Staining Furniture

Make your own jumbo ball clock with a 10-inch dial in Wenge with aluminum markers and hands by following the easy instructions here.

“Wenge is a really neat-looking, dense harwood with a distinctly contrasting grain pattern. I cut out the round for the dial on the bandswaw before sanding it with 150, 220, 400, and 600 grit sandpaper. I finished it with a rubbing of Howard feed-n-wax.”

DIY: Jumbo Ball Clock

If you have an old television set lying around the house don’t throw it away. Make a fish tank out of it and save some money in the process.

This is what you need to do.

1. Rebuild the cabinet out of MDF/Craftwood so that it allows for a flip lid.
2. Stain it with an acrylic estapol satin stain.
3. Attach the original legs to the finished cabinet.
4. Stain or lacquer all the surfaces multiple times to ward off any effects of condensation (the formation of water droplets) in the enclosed space.
5. Build in some ventilation at the back to discourage condensation within the cabinet.

Get a tank that is slightly wider and taller than the screen. If your T.V. console won’t fit a standard tank size, you can have a custom one built to fit. Make sure that you leave enough room for the reflector/light (about 6 cm). A remote ballast light is a good idea, as it takes up very little room and you can get the tank and water level higher than the top of the screen.
7. Mount the powerboard outside the cabinet at the back (in case of water spillage or condensation issues).
8. Place the air pump inside the cabinet to suppress the noise. It can be mounted outside if there is not enough room.
9. Fill and cycle the tank properly and introduce the stars of your show — the fish!

Make unique lamps and vases from leftover bottles by following the instructions posted here.

Method 1: Dip a piece of common string in alcohol and squeeze dry, or as dry as it will get without dripping. This string should then be placed on the already marked glass and tied tight. Light the string and let it burn off. Immediately, while the glass is still hot, plunge it into cold water. Be sure the container of water is large enough to let the glass to completely submerge, as well your arm up to the elbow, so as to deaden the vibration when you strike the glass.

Strike the glass with your other hand above the line using a wooden stick and hitting a sharp stroke. This quick, sharp stroke will break the glass where the burning string has weakened it, as if done by a regular glass cutter. This method may be used to cut bottles in any shape, and to make vases. You can perform many such cuttings on glass.

Here’s what you’ll need:

-Hot Iron Transfers (we used Aunt Martha’s “Birds for Varied Uses” but we also love all the iron on transfers available at Sublime Stitching:

-Iron Wooden Tray (we used the “Skala” tray from Ikea, $12.99)

-Woodburning Tool ($13)

-Damp rag

1. Carefully cut out the pattern you want to transfer and place it on your tray in the desired position.

2. Using a hot, dry iron, transfer the pattern onto the tray (this should only take a few seconds) making sure not to move the pattern paper as you iron over it.

3. If your woodburning tool has interchangeable tips, switch to the thinnest point for more detail.

4. Plug in your woodburning tool and while it’s warming up, prepare a damp cloth to wipe off the tip while you’re burning in your design.

5. Remove the pattern paper and trace the design with the tool just like you would with a pen or pencil. And please be careful. That thing gets hot!!

Upholstered headboards are quite in vogue and can be easily made at home. Real Simple has a great post on how to make a headboard and check it out here.

From Real Simple:
Supplies
# 1 standard 3/4-quarter-inch-thick sheet of plywood cut 44 inches high and to the width of your bed (39 inches for a twin; 54 for a double; 60 for a queen; 76 for a king)
# 1 one-by-four cut into 2 pieces that are 12 inches longer than the distance from your floor to the top of the mattress
# 1 54-inch-wide piece of fabric cut at least 12 inches longer than the width of your bed
# 1 2-inch-thick piece of foam cut to the dimensions of your headboard (can be purchased from www.foamorder.com)
# 1 roll of cotton batting (90 by 108 inches; www.joann.com)
# 1 can of 3M Spray Mount
# 4 1 1/4-inch wood screws

1. Cover one side of the plywood with spray mount then attach the foam.
2. Wrap with a layer of cotton batting to smooth out any sharp edges and the corners. Attach with a staple gun.
3. With a staple gun, attach the fabric along one end of the headboard and then the opposite side, remembering to pull the fabric taut. Then attach the other two sides.
4. Turn the headboard over and place the one-by-fours 12 inches from the sides, making sure that the top of the one-by-four is 12 inches from the bottom of the headboard. Screw the one-by-fours to the headboard. Place the headboard against the wall and push in the bed.
