“I’ve always been surrounded by people who were a little bit altruistic … and to have this always around you, I just found there was an imbalance with my work,” says Ms. LaPlante, who started her career in San Francisco.
“Interior design can be so wasteful, you know? You go in and rip everything out and make things that aren’t necessarily being made by people paid a living wage. … I didn’t want to stop being a designer, but I didn’t want to feel nasty about it, either.”
